Acid suppressant use and intestinal colonisation with multidrug-resistant organisms

Willems et al published their study online recently in JAMA Internal Medicine in which they performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies which investigated intestinal carriage of multi-drug resistant organisms in patients who also used acid suppressors (mostly proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor antagonists).

Although observational studies do have limitations, they demonstrated an increased risk of multi-drug resistant organism carriage with acid suppression. You can see the full paper here.
