Post-operative antibiotic prophylaxis

De Jonge and colleagues recently published their systematic review and meta-analysis of the benefit of continuing antibiotic prophylaxis after surgery for the prevention of surgical site infection, in The Lancet.

They reviewed 83 RCTs, of which 52 were included in the primary meta-analysis of continuing antibiotics post-operatively vs. immediate discontinuation. They found no benefit in continuing antibiotics postoperatively as opposed to administering them only pre-and intra-operatively (if indicated), according to best practice standards. Limiting antibiotic usage has numerous advantages such as reducing cost and the risk of adverse events, and importantly, contributing to antibiotic stewardship.
